SIX ON SATURDAY: You’re On Your Own

I’ve done so little in the garden this year. Not nothing, but very little. Thank goodness for flowering shrubs and dependable perennials.

My hydrangeas dot the borders with their stunning blues, but they’re fading quickly to that weird purplish-greenish color already. I can find some beauty in that phase too.

The Encore azaleas are blooming again.  This is Autumn Amethyst which shares a bed with some other things in the pink family: returning caladiums and self-seeding impatience.

The running Red Cascade miniature rose is doing pretty well.

I bought a couple of small Red Drift roses to keep it company in this small sunny corner.

One purple coneflower survived and is blooming next to a yellow daylily.

A few plants occupy the etagere on the deck.

Spring’s Louisiana iris have produced these pods on their stems. I should do a little research to find out how to propagate them because I don’t think they do it naturally on their own.

But that describes our little patch of property right now. Most of it is surviving on its own. I’ve allowed too many things to get in the way of garden maintenance, although furnishing the new deck and painting the metal accouterments are small victories.

I suppose there’s still time to add new embellishments to the flower beds, but we’re entering a season where it’s too hot to plant things. Ah well, there’s always autumn.

  1. Perhaps never more than in today’s post, I realize how much your garden points us to our faith and walk in Christ. My lesson today from you is, “The love poured into us is what allows us to be beautiful even in the slow times of our lives.” Your garden remains beautiful because of the all the love and effort you poured into in the past. It remains vibrant and beautiful because of all that you put into it. Makes me think of our children. They are a product of what is poured into them when they are young.
